Tim Huelskamp, Ph.D., began his service as president of The Heartland Institute in July 2017. From 2011 to 2017, Tim served three terms in Congress where he was a member of the House Freedom Caucus, Whip of the Pro-Life Caucus, and Chairman of the Tea Party Caucus. Congressman Huelskamp led efforts to reform the VA, sponsored the Marriage Amendment, and passed language to protect religious liberty for military chaplains. From 1997 to 2011, Dr. Huelskamp served as a Kansas state senator. There Tim led education and welfare reform, fought for tax and spending cuts, passed the Kansas Marriage Amendment, and defunded Planned Parenthood. Prior to leading Heartland, Tim was a fifth-generation family farmer. He earned a B.A. summa cum laude from the College of Santa Fe and a Ph.D. in Political Science from American University. Dr. Huelskamp and his wife Angela met doing pro-life work and have four adopted children.
