Florida Senator
Marco Rubio, junior U. S. Senator from Florida, is a leading contender for the Republican nomination for President in 2016. He previously served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. A Cuban American native born in Miami, Florida, in 1971, Rubio is a graduate of the University of Florida and the University of Miami Law School. In the late 1990s, he served as a City Commissioner for West Miami and was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000, representing the 111th House district. He was elected Speaker in November 2006. In a three-way split, Rubio won the general election for U. S. Senate in November 2010 with 49 percent of the vote. On April 13, 2015, Rubio announced his candidacy for president in 2016 and that he would not seek re-election to his Senate seat. He is author of the new book, “American Dreams: Restoring Economic Opportunity for Everyone.” He has joined with Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) to propose a tax reform bill that reduces the tax brackets to 15% and 35%, and eliminates the marriage penalty.
